Haiti Mercy Mission: Update 1/15/2010 PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 15 January 2010 14:18

I wanted to give everyone a brief update on Haiti.  We are happy to report and Ann and Sassette have returned safely to the orphanage from Port-Au-Prince.  They have brought with them four children in need of a home for the time being.  It was a happy reunion and we are happy to have everyone accounted for directly with Haiti Mercy Mission.

The reports are starting to come back to areas outside the capital on the numbers who have died. Many people travel to the capital during the week to work and get supplies.  The rumors and confirmations of lost loved ones are starting to reach all of Haiti including the villages.

We are working to confirm the roads from the current location of Haiti Mercy Mission to the Dominican Republic are open.  It is our hope to get the volunteers back to the US from the Dominican Republic Airport.  The leaders of the mission will then be discussing the best ways to help and provide assistance given the very challenging times that lay ahead for everyone in Haiti.  Security, Fuel, Food, and Supplies will be in short supply and planning now is critical.

I am asking again for DONATIONS.  If you have a church or work group that would consider making a donation you can mail checks too:

Haiti Mercy Mission

PO Box 164

Nisswa, MN 56468

All donations will go directly to AID.  Or you can CHIP-IN using your VISA or MASTERCARD & PAYPAL:

Haiti Mercy Mission: The Mayor's Parents PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 13 January 2010 13:33

            CLICK ON CHIPIN

       TO GIVE ONLINE TODAY!!

UPDATE: WE HAVE RAISED $500.00 TO THIS POINT: THE CHIPIN PEOPLE ARE WORKING ON GETTING THE WIDGET TO REFLECT THAT PROPERLY.

Haiti Mercy Mission is an organization based out of Nisswa, MN. It is run by my parents Frank & Jeanette McLaughlin. They, along with my brother and a few supporters, just landed in Haiti a few days ago. Little did they know the situation they would find themselves in today.

We were able to talk with them briefly over SKYPE last night to confirm that everyone is okay. They were feeling aftershocks but at the time reports on the extent of damage was unconfirmed.

Today we are learning just how much loss of life is expected to occur.  Please pray for Ann & Sassette who are both Haitian and in Port-au-Prince.  They were heard from last night and were okay, but communication and travel will be impossible for some time.  Ann oversees the orphanage where my parents help and they face a struggle today.

The needs will be many for Haiti Mercy Mission.  I am including this link (click here) for everyone to see that your money will go directly to Haiti.  Your donation will go 100% to providing AID, SUPPLIES, AND COMFORT.  There will be no funds used for administration, overhead, fundraising, etc.  I have set an initial target at $10,000 dollars.

The real impact for the rest of the country is the transportation system halting.  Food, fuel, and everyday items are generally scarce in country like Haiti.  This earthquake will make it a crisis in a very short period of time.  We will be trying to keep in contact with my parents to see how we can try and assist in the delivery of supplies to their remote location.

PLEASE GIVE!!  ALL GIFTS ARE TAX-DEDUCITABLE.  RECEIPTS WILL BE ISSUED AND UPDATES WILL BE FORTHCOMING ON MY WEBSITE DUE TO THE FACT MY PARENTS WILL BE UNABLE TO UPDATE THEIR WEBSITE AT HAITI MERCY MISSION.

Cutting Off A Nose To Spite Our Face PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 03 January 2010 18:33

It is becoming sad to watch how political agendas/interests have supplanted any hope of attaining good policy in the upcoming legislative session.

I remember listening to a good friend that works at the legislature recount how Rep. Rukavina was chiding Republican's in the hallway on how their "special interest" allies had abandoned them on an important vote a few years ago.  He went on to mention that their "special interest" allies would never pull such a stunt.  Rep. Rukavina, sadly, is right!

Had cities and counties been smart they would have, in fact, joined with Governor Pawlenty in supporting his right to unallot us out of the latest budget crisis.  They did not need to agree, but rather realize and support the fact we had closure.  The remedies and injustices could be worked on with the next legislative session a few short weeks from now.  Instead they chose to let DFLers stir a pot that leaves cities and counties in a position we do not benefit from.

It makes you wonder what "special interest" groups Rep. Rukavina was referring to when he made that statement.  I had a representative of the Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities, and another person from the League of Minnesota Cities tell me how their groups are "non-partisan" and how they work both sides of the isle to bring about reform and solutions.

I asked them to tally up a public report listing the times they criticized the Governor and Republican leaders.  Then count up the times they have criticized DFL leaders.  (Rhino's do not count as Republicans!!)

I am still waiting for this report.  However, Rep. Rukavina knows the answer, and so do a lot of legislators, mayors, and hopefully now a few more citizens reading America's Small City Mayor.

Happy New Year PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 30 December 2009 15:52

I wanted to wish everyone A Happy New Year!!

It amazes this small city mayor how the readership continues expanding at America's Small City Mayor. The number of people that have signed up to have articles delivered directly to their inbox using FeedBurner is amazing.  The people following my Twitter account, and the interaction that occurs on a daily basis is really enjoyable.

The readership on articles at America's Small City Mayor and True North far surpass the actual size of my city by leaps and bounds.  I am still a small fish in the world of blogging and politics when compared to those in the Twin Cities, but that's okay.

Honestly, I think it is fitting that there still is a "small city" feel to my blog.

My favorite compliment for the year came in from an economic development professional down in Kansas who enjoyed reading how our city is tackling hazardous buildings that are way past their prime.  He wrote: "your commentary and tips have really helped me tackle some problem areas in our city.  Writing your accomplishments and challenges gave us a place to start.  It is something that is so hard to find and we are making great progress.....Thanks!!"

My favorite personal slam came in from anonymous. (so she thinks/calls herself when she emails)  She said that I am "A Mayor with an ego as big as his city!" and "it's amazing you have lasted this long serving in Clarissa."  I thought that was really creative comparing my ego to the physical size of Clarissa, so I asked her in my replay if that makes me incredibly humble when compared to her favorite Mayor R.T. Rybak.  She loves to give and I am just crazy enough to take it.  I look forward to her email rants when they come in.

I love the emails that come in and cover a wide spectrum of ideas.

Keep those emails and story ideas coming.  As always, if you want to publish an editorial feel free to send it my way.

Happy New Year!!

~ The Mayor

Powerline: The Strib Arrives Late To The Case PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 28 December 2009 11:39

Written by Scott Johnson

Elected in November 2000, Mark Dayton served as Minnesota's United States Senator from 2001-2007. While in office he distinguished himself with erratic behavior including the closure of his Senate office in October 2004. Having been named by Time as one of the five worst Senators, Dayton did not seek reelection to the Senate when his term expired. He is nevertheless now seeking the Democratic nomination to run for Minnesota governor, and he is back in the news.

Dayton is one of the beneficiaries of the Dayton's (now Target) department store fortune. He himself has never worked in the private sector and has spent most of his adult life in politics. Back in 2004 I wrote somewhat uncharitably that "Dayton is Minnesota's contribution to the psychiatric profession."

Yesterday liberal Star Tribune editorial columnist Lori Sturdevant attempted to perform some public relations work for Dayton, devoting her column to his struggle with depression and an alcoholic relapse during his Senate term. Sturdevant is a Democratic hack and her column treated Dayton with kid gloves. Today, however, the Star Tribune follows up with a much more aggressive news story that explores an alcoholic relapse during his Senate term.

At a charity auction in 1994 or so I won the opportunity to have Dayton take me and a friend to lunch at the Minneapolis Club. The lunch occurred toward the end of Dayton's tenure as the Minnesota state auditor. At lunch we argued politics and found nothing on which to agree. The lunch was extremely unpleasant because Dayton seemed to be able to disagree agreeably. Dayton nevertheless put me on his Christmas card list for roughly the next five years.

Over those five years Dayton used his Christmas cards to discuss the dissolution of his two marriages, his entry into rehabilitation for alcoholism and related therapy issues. His psychiatric challenges were no secret to the many people on Dayton's Christmas card list, including virtual strangers like me.

In its story today, the Star Tribune reports: "People who have worked closely with Dayton or within the DFL said they have long known the former senator struggled with mental health issues." Later the story adds: "Opponents -- and even some supporters -- have long whispered of his possible struggle with mental illness."

Well, thanks. Where, one might ask, was the Star Tribune during Dayton's Senate campaign? It wouldn't have taken much digging to report this story during the 2000 Senate campaign.

It also wouldn't have take much digging to report the story during Dayton's six-year term in office, when Dayton provided the Star Tribune with many occasions that made the story relevant. Today's story notes, for example: "Dayton said neither his depression nor his alcoholism affected his political decisions, including those to close his Senate office in 2004 when he -- and no one else -- perceived Washington to be at an immediate risk for terrorism."

Now that Dayton himself has sought to defuse the issue by making it public, the Star Tribune has jumped on the case. Does anyone notice that it's about five or ten years late?
